English Language


1. Aims:


1.1 To develop studentsˇ¦ intrinsic motivation in learning English language and to let them experience that learning English can be fun and interesting.
1.2 To promote a positive learning atmosphere by introducing authentic learning materials (e.g. meaningful texts, daily living examples, videos) in class.
1.3 To help students see the value of what they are learning and to give them a reasonable expectation of success (e.g. achievable and realistic goals) in achieving it.
1.4 To promote a culture of reading among students
1.5 To help students to develop an ever-improving capability to use English a) to think and communicate, b) to acquire, develop and apply knowledge and c) to respond and give expression to experience.

2. Implementation:


2.1 The task-based approach is used in the English Language Education curriculum to help students progress towards the learning targets and objectives as well as develop the generic skills, values and attitudes.
2.2 Cooperative learning style and student-centered learning style are the focused of our teaching.
2.3 Group work and Pair work are well adopted in learning activities.
2.4 Split-class arrangement reduces teacher-students ratio which in turn allows teachers to give students more individual care and attention. Teachers can also better cater studentsˇ¦ individual needs and students can learn better.
2.5 Formative as well as summative feedbacks are used.

3. Objectives:


3.1 To help students to realize the need to use English for study,
and for enjoyment.
3.2 To nurture a culture of English language both in class and
outside classroom.
3.3 To widen studentsˇ¦ exposure to authentic English by using authentic teaching materials, for example, listening to English songs, watching English movies and cartoons, as well as reading English newspapers, etc.
3.4 To motivate studentsˇ¦ interests in learning English by using communicative approach.
3.5 To help students to develop good study skills by having pair work and group work.
3.6 To help students to acquire the basic knowledge of pronunciation by teaching phonics so that they can pronounce the English words accurately.

4. Assessment:


4.1 Regular exercises and homework count toward final assessment.
4.2 Major project-based assignments for each module:
- personal identity kit
- ideal classroom design
- internet research project
- menu and poster design
- making an advertisement
- making a package of information for tourist to H.K.
4.3 Exams at the end of each module use meaningful, related materials and include oral and listening components.
